Just sounding out owners of a Katabatic Gear Flex quilt to check if your more recent KG Flex quilts (Chinese shells filled in the US) is true to the weight given in the specs. I’ve recently bough a KG Flex 30 (6′, regular, 850 FP, no overfill) that is 22.4 oz on my scale, i.e.a full 1.8 oz over the weight given on their website.

Katabatic’s answer to my query was that such discrepancies usually come down to issues with the scale used but the weight has been confirmed on two different scales, owned by two different people.

If everyone else’s quilt is overweight, I guess the shell is heavier than advertised. If they all comes close to specs, maybe I am the happy recipient of an accidental overfill. Maybe I shouldn’t ask and just kid myself it is the latter case. ;-)

I have a Flex 22 that is US made and filled and came in a little over 2oz more than spec.  I ordered another for comparison that was closer to spec – just 1/2oz over.  The first definately had more down and measured nearly 5 inches shorter (in a fluffed and relaxed state) due to the increased fill bulging the baffled chambers.  In the end I kept the overfilled and over spec quilt and sent the other one back.

i have purchased 5 other elite quilts from them since 2010 and they all were within a couple tenths of an ounce to spec, including those ordered with overfill.  It bothered me a bit at first but I looked at it as a free overfill, insurance against high humidity, increase loft longevity, and lost some belly weight to compensate.

I’m surprised to hear about the discrepancy given Katabatic’s reputation for meticulous construction.

I have a Katabatic Gear Flex 30, bought two years ago, that came in .5oz under spec.

I was surprised and so was Kris Diers but I’m not concerned. With a less reputable company, I’d worry about a higher weight of lower FP down but with KG, I’ll put it down to an overenthusiastic fill turning it into a 25F quilt.

I’m very happy with it all the same.
