Going on a 6 day trip on the N. Lake/S. Lake loop trail beginning May 29.  Trying to get thoughts on  bringing the Katabatic Gear Flex 22 or 30 (1 oz overfill) quilt.

Admittedly I may be overthinking being cold on a trip beginning the very end of may and going into June.

I feel like i sleep warm.  I also have down booties, down pants, a down jacket, and a down hood  (just missing the gloves, lol).  I’m already taking the jacket, and strongly considering the pants.  thinking I could bring those along with the booties and hood, for the versatility, and just bring the Flex 30?

Anyone think I would absolutely need all the down clothes as well as the 22 degree quilt?

The 22 only weighs a few more oz. than the 30.  Personally, I would get the 22 to have some margin of warmth. And I’d take all the down clothes as well-it’s nice to be warm sitting around at camp. Looks like that trip has some high elevations …it could be cold!

But then again, I am not a so-called oz. counter. Some folks advocate strongly for a sleeping bag/quilt that is slightly less warm than they need and bolster it up by wearing clothes when in the bag. My experience is that a warmer bag works better.

My $0.02.

For me, it would come down to checking the temperatures on weather.gov at the elevations I would be sleeping at the week before.

I have a similar setup and I prefer using a lighter quilt and supplementing it clothing since I like to lounge around camp. 40* quilt, down hoody and pants with 3 oz. fill each, booties with 4 oz. Climashield Apex, and Alpha 60 hoody and pants. I sleep cold and I’ve taken this setup down to freezing on a NeoAir XTherm without the Alpha layers and was plenty warm. That’s probably as far as I would push this setup though.

Like Paul mention, a warmer bag will work better and be a lot lighter, but I like having the flexibility with the multiple pieces.

I’m also doing the North to South Lake loop, but it’ll be later in the year. I’ll be switching out the XTherm for a XLite.

IMHO, bring the down clothes. It’s nice to have for evenings, overnight trips and for minimizing drafts. But mostly I like to have the modulation of insulation, just like layering clothing during the day. If I need to cool down a bit, I can stick out an arm or vent the quilt without going from overheating to freezing a limb.

22, for me. that’s a very all-rounder temp rating. although if this is a new purchase, I’d go with the alsek and just drap it over me when it’s warmer

Hmmm … that’s a tough one. So hard to decide. Maybe you need more 3-season sleeping bags. Perhaps a 26 degree bag?  ;-)
