I’ve been really skunked lately on Grand Canyon Permits. Just fyi I’ve done North Kaibab, South Kaibab, Bright Angel and also Deer Creek Thunder river loop. ( that last was a BEAR, with no bears of course) No luck on a May permit this year. I read somewhere on here you could hike Kanab creek without a permit without breaking any rules. I’m not interested in stealth camping in GCNP though I’ve sure seen it. But I guess there is a way to hike down on Forest Service land, and then in and out as day hikes, camping below the rim but on Forest service land? Or maybe I misunderstood. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Google is your friend.
Doesn’t sound like a day hike to me. YMMV.
Edit to Add: Consider how you will deal with water access and carries.
You could camp just upstream from Jumpup Canyon and go most, if not all of the way to the river and back as a dayhike. Some burly miles in there but doable.
