I recently got a permit to hike the JMT this year (after failing to get one last year). I plan to keep a blog of my trip, and decided to add a page that describes the permit process for those applying for a permit from Yosemite (as it is a bit complicated, especially for first-time applicants). I hope it is helpful to those applying for the first time!
Thanks for the information. My wife and I are hoping to get a permit for September. How many attempts did it take to get yours?
I applied for almost 3 weeks last year and didn’t get one. This year I was rejected over a dozen times. On a whim, I checked the full trailheads report and saw that two spots opened up. I applied right away, and got the permits! I recommend applying the traditional way (168 days in advance), and also applying each day for canceled spots that have opened up.
September will likely not be too difficult going SOBO. Also many permits are held and only made available to walk up hikers AND since you have to show up to pick a permit you scored online there are “no shows” and you can grab these.
Yosemite rangers work hard to enable JMT thru hikes so if you cannot score a permit ahead of time, especially for September, go ahead and show up…they will figure out a way. 90% chance you can get a permit leaving Yosemite Valley for that day (a no show after 11am) or get a next day permit.
July through 1st half August requires more creativity, but September should be pretty easy.
