I’m not doctor, nor do I play one on the internet. I have no medical experience. With that caveat, here’s my anecdotal experience.
Two years ago, my son did the Hiking Merit Badge and I did the hikes with him. I never had knee pain, except when hiking down hill. The pain was on the outside of my knees and Dr. Google indicated this is consistent with IT band issues.
I had started working out at the gym including a weekly session with a trainer after being a couch potato for many years. I was in my mid-40s.
For the past few years I’ve continued to work out at the gym doing general functional and strength exercises with perhaps a little more emphasis on legs for this issue and because we’re going to Philmont this year.
I’ve done many hikes and zero IT band pain. I can only assume that all the various types of weighted squats, lunges, leg presses, etc. along with daily stretching of my legs has helped.
Dr. Google reveals very different opinions on rolling out the IT band. Some, including my trainer say to do it. Others say because it’s not a muscle, you shouldn’t use a roller on it. I haven’t used a roller on it.
I mostly post this to offer some hope for those who struggle with this.
