I haven’t updated my glove system in years.  I was using  a fleece glove, vbl, mit and lightweight outer goretex shell mit.   My gloves are falling apart and full of holes, I am intrigued by the promise of Aerogel but wondering if I should just go with the staples like OR synthetic mitts, etc.  Also if anyone could recommend a few of the modern staples as I have been out of the loop for some time, I prefer a layer system.  thank you

Listening to cutting-edge researchers a bazillion (actually 30) years ago at UC Berkeley, they were describing aerogels as a ultra-low-density rigid foam that held great promise for things like refrigerators (people want them big on the inside, small on the outside but energy efficient).  What they were working on and describing to us didn’t  sound like it could be adapted to clothing that has to bend and flex, but maybe advances have been made?

The little bit I’ve seen from clothing marketers recently is so goofy (“Used to keep astronauts warm at -455F”) that I didn’t think there was any there there.
