I just got an interesting gas canister used in small torches – it may be available in some hardware stores here but I don’t know the source. The contents are specified by volume – 150 ml, but I was able to find the fill weight as well – 85g. That is in line with my previous estimate based on the density of the liquid gas. It has the standard threaded valve so it works with normal stoves (although it makes sense only for ones with a remote canister); I’ve tested that already.

I like the size form factor a lot, and because of the shape, the canister to contents  weight ratio is very probably better than for standard 100g canisters. It is filled with 30:70 propane-butane mix, not just butane like similarly sized lighter refill cans.

The problem is that the canister I got is partially used, so that I don’t know the total weight (and the numbers I found on the web vary too much). If somebody knows this canister, please post the weigh of either full or empty one. Otherwise, I have to empty it first to get that number.

Roger, It’s very probable I can buy them somewhere, but I haven’t looked yet. Refilling will be easy, it’s the standard threaded valve for which I already have the tools.

Chuckle. Thought so.

Stuart Robb sent me an aluminium Go Systems canister of about the same size. Should be fine for a few nights out.

Cheers

I have emptided the canister by now, it weights 48g. The canister is 36% of the total weight when full — not bad, for example a 100g jetboil canister I have at hand weights 50% of the total. (some more percentages can be found at zenstoves.net)

One could regret the inefficiency of a 48 g canister. But then, consider the weight of the tank for an XGK – let alone the weight of an XGK! You are still winning.

Cheers
