Hey my wife and I are going to Ireland and Scotland for 2 weeks in January and I’m looking for some advice. Not the best time of the year but it’s the only time that we could go.

First, what type of insulated jacket should I (we) bring? I am leaning towards synthetic but need something warm enough to use during that time of year. Either that or someone convince me on what type of down! Treated, non-treated, or any particular brands.

Also, We are looking for a few suggestions on locations to hike while we are over there.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

For January in Ireland I would go with synthetic as good chance it will be above freezing a lot of the time and very wet. Scotland is generally colder so down may be more useful, but it could be pouring rain also.

Go with Synthetic if you have one that’s warm enough and bring proper rain gear.

What are you coming to Scotland to do?

January temperatures are typically -5C to +10C (sometimes in a single day!) but can be -10C or less if you are lucky.

I would personaly go for a 200gm2 parka.

Or a 100gm2 with a light down piece underneath.

You have Wiggy’s, made in England. Why not go with one of their jackets?

Otherwise I’d get one insulated with Climashield if you want the loft to last.
