Im considering swapping my Inreach mini to the Mini 2.  Is it straight forward with the plan and swap?  Can I just add the Mini 2 to my existing account and delete the Mini? Or do I need to open a new account?

Well thats what it says to do. I didn’t actually get it yet, but I am thinking about it.. wanted to make sure easy swap over. Im not exactly tech savvy and I dont have a computer or laptop.. so…  👋  hi .

It was a while ago that I switched from an earlier InReach to the Mini. It was pretty easy as I recall. Deactivate the old one and activate the new one on the website.

I believe the mini 2 uses a different app. Maybe you can reply if you encounter any issues. I’ve thought about the same for a while.

curious why you picked the Mini 2 instead of the messenger?

Ummm… never thought about messenger really. I have just always had the original Inreach,   then the Mini.  I dont even really use them.  Occasional messages here and there to family when im out, so they know I am alive.. but thats about the extent of it. It has always worked that way,  so I guess creature of habbit.. stick with what I know?

Looking at it. I have no need to send photo. The talk option I guess ok if you cant text from an injury .. but if I dunno about that, doesn’t sell me.  Hey,  the Mini 2 is lighter and since my tarp and bivy may be on heavy side, I need to cut weight somewhere.. not add. Mini 2 it is!!

Why upgrade, dirtbag? I still use the original Mini, but only for check-ins with home, coordinating with co-hikers, at most 3x/day + weather as needed, or SOS if nec., not for tracking, social media…, and the battery is still super, so see no reason to upgrade.

I agree.  But the battery on the 2 is sooooo much better I believe.  Just thinking about it. I have so many points from REI and need absolutely nothing at all… so if I was to upgrade anything,  tbat would be something to consider. I also will not add anything new to any of my kits. Its upgrade/ replace what I currently use or nothing at all.

I was shocked at how poor the Mini was compared the larger Explorer inreach in terms of battery life. Multiple 3 day trips with the Explorer left on it almost never got below 80%, usually only used a 3-5% per day,  My Mini loses 20-30% a day with limited use and clear site to the sky.

30% seems a bit in the high side. Any tracking going on? Latest firmware? Have you tried placing it out side to get some baseline battery usage? It is possible that the battery is just old.

Zero tracking. Latest firmware. Could be battery aging.
