Good heavens! Too much work, with a high rate of disappointment and failure.

Again, bring a pillow case, stuff a puffy, tie a knot at the end, sleep.

You don’t bring a puffy? Surely you have a down vest, and other clothes. These work too, but a puffy in a pillow case is like sleeping on a cloud.

Don’t like bringing a puffy anything with me in July/August.

Light sleeper, and spare clothes in a pillowcase are uncomfortable and keep me awake no matter how tired I might be from hiking.

I simply use a small square of  “anti slip” material —  the kind often used under couch cushions — between inflatable pad and inflatable pillow.  I also use a longer rectangle of the same stuff between my pad and what in my case is the very slippery floor of an X-Mid Pro2.  Super light and super effective in both uses.

I took some inspiration and sewed some cut up shoe lace to some DCF patch strips I had and then attached it a DreamSleeper. Had some shock cord lying around to complete the pad strap. Weighs 52g all in now which is the lightest pillow with a pad strap that I have now (while still being comfortable. With the cord lock, I can add a buff as a pillow case if I want and easily adjust it around 20in or 25in pads. TBD on longevity.

If you have an Aeros pillow, S2S will send you stick on Velcro for free, just ask customer service through their email contact.  Worked perfectly on my  Tensor pad.

The grippy shelf liner stuff is passable under a mat but didn’t get much love under a pillow

Justin congrats on coming up with a creative solution that works! I tried the S2S velcro and it works but I like to move my pillow a bit with it sliding away.

With some final solutions now made, I wouldn’t consider 5 minutes too much work…and…this is a high rate of satisfaction for me (not high rate of disappointment)…and…is super strong (so…neither a high rate of failure).

I absolutely bring a puffy…but…this is backpacking light. Most of the time I’m wearing the puffy to bed to supplement my quilt. So, I can’t rely on always having my puffy to use as a pillow. But on warmer nights, yes, I can absolutely stuff my puffy into my buff instead of using my dreamsleeper pillow (or…do a combo of both). Regardless….I would still use the straps to keep the pillow in place which is the main issue here…not what pillow I’m using.

You mean like this?

I wouldn’t use it for the pillow, but interesting for the pad. How much does your weigh? This one is 8.8oz, so too heavy to bring.

My family just got back in town from a week trip, and I have changed my mind about a whole elastic loop around the pad. This one weighs .35oz and was from EE (notice the quilt connectors)

I tried out the new version neoair NXT and nemo tensor which have horizontal baffles and the pillow did stay in place well enough through the night. So…with horizontal baffles, and a buff, I think just using a pad strap (or elastic cord like Justin H did above) would work great. My smaller strap with toggles weighs .17 oz, but also requires loops to be added on the pad. But…I think for vertical baffles like the exped, is still necessary.

As an aside….I really wanted to like the NXT due to the thicker material and weight, but the side collapses too easily for a side sleeper, and I didn’t like the new valve (especially since it doesn’t work with the schnozzle). I did like the nemo tensor…it just has a 1.5oz weight penalty. Will probably stick with my expeds until they die though.

Looks great! Though…if the tape doesn’t hold, aquaseal will absolutely hold and be permanent.

@DGoggins — sorry for the delay; have been off-line.

Yes, the mat you picture looks very much like what I most recently got (from Target, for maybe $3).  I trimmed a small rectangle of that to use for my pillow.  Certainly wouldn’t take the whole thing for that purpose.

To keep my mat from slipping I use something similar but longer and narrower and thinner that I got elsewhere, several years ago.  And in that case as well I cut what I originally got in half, use one half, and gave the rest to a buddy.
