Hey folks, this poncho is worth checking out if you’re looking for a light one that won’t cost a fortune.

If you don’t live near an IKEA, check it out here.

If you’re interested, I write a blog post with some pics here.

The grey one has a definite Monty Python Knights of the Round Table thing going on.

The red one has the nice table cloth look

Interesting! Judging from the photos, this IKEA poncho is different from traditional designs.

Traditional ponchos are big rectangles of fabric with a hole and hood for your head. You can sort of close the sides up with snaps, velcro, or (rarely) zippers. Your arms stick through gaps in the sides.

The IKEA poncho is more like a big cone with a hole and hood for your head, plus holes for your arms. The sides are sewn completely shut:

The hole for your head looks a little larger than most, with a flap, velcro and elastic to close it up.

The price is fantastic.

Compared to a traditional poncho, this one might have far less ventilation due to the completely closed sides. Arm coverage might be better or worse, depending on the length of your arms. You won’t be able to us it as a tarp shelter. As with all things IKEA, longevity might be an issue, but at this price, maybe not.

Definitely checking this out next time I’m in IKEA.

Good find.

Interesting idea, but zero ventilation. I suspect a lot of sweat.

Cheers

I bought a couple. It is really a cape rather than a poncho, much like the ones used by the Swiss army. There is plentry ventilation and the neck opens so it allows more airflow at the top than my GoLite and easier to get over my head too.  It has taped seams as well. The sewing at the corners of the arm openings is a bit weak, but still totally worth the price.

This should be a winner for CYA summer day hikes where you want to resist taking your rain gear. Great for bigger kids,. Scouts and the like. I’m 5’10” and it covers me to the knees. You can’t make a tarp shelter of it, but you could sit out a squall sitting at the base of a tree with your pack between your legs and be completely covered. I guess you could waterproof a brush shelter with it. I would.sit under the tree :)

Caveat: it is not cut to cover a big pack with extra fabric in back, but should be fine for UL day packs.

When I use this poncho I’ll def check back in and give some details.

White would be a discount Klan uniform; just add a pointy hat.

Tried mine out this weekend.  The water beads right up but I was only in mist/light rain.  It covers my Leopard 58 barely, but enough.  I didn’t have a huge issue with sweating, but I only used it for 3 miles till the weather cleared up.  It would fit better over a smaller pack, maybe 45L and below.  Good for a weekend where you;re not expecting a huge downpour or a loaner for a friend.  Not too bad for $7.
