I’m thinking of designing some backpacking/hiking/urban adventuring/travel shorts. Think Arc’Teryx approach in terms of style and functionality but not that insanely expensive or so snug.

I think a cross section of most decent shorts or convertible pants these days offer good mix of quick driability, lightness, pockets, room for your stride, abrasion resistance, waist adjustabilty.  But I havent found any that are fashionable outside the trail. Ok, so the trail is not the place to be fashionable. But, think travel…..

Do some of you wish for shorts that had all the right functional elements and looked somewhat cool? I know the answer may vary by generation, personal taste. I personally have not found any such shorts that I would wear around town, say in San Francisco after/before a few days of having hiked/backpacked Yosemite (example Columbia Silver Ridges)

Where and in what orientation should a cell phone pocket be placed for quick in and out of snapping photos?

What about built in underwear/liner whatever its called? Chaffing problems?

Do hiking shorts need to come down to the knee??

Thank you

The Prana Stretch Zion shorts are pretty close to being both backpackable and urban friendly. The material is a bit warm and slow drying, but wears well. I thought the dual zippered thigh pocket was goofy before I used it, but its a perfect solution for smartphone access either sitting or standing.

+1 on the PraNa Stretch Zion Design!

I am actually wearing them now at work….the side zipper on the cargo pocket was a pleasant surprise, once I figured out what it was for.

I agree that the fabric is a “heavy”/warm, but the comfort and style of it is great.

I did buy some of their swim trunks that also are nice looking shorts….so dual usage.

Deep, mesh pockets are great for quick drying and allow for storing your phone and offers quick access.

The Prana pants have a rear pocket that has a fabric flap that covers the opening so you can’t have stuff fall out while running or being active.

My understanding is that Prana was started by rock climbers who wanted clothing that could go from the office to the trail, hence the stretchy fabric and other design features.

I would probably opt to cut off the shorts just above the knee, but this is a style thing….no clue.

If you are going to cover the knee for protection, then you are really looking at pants that cut off at the shins…..not sure what that is called.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Tony
