In all of my years of backpacking or hiking, I’ve never used the ice axe loops for anything. I hate to have anything on a backpack wasted. What do you use the loops for?

I have only used them for an ice axe. Most trips don’t require an ice axe though.
If they’re shock cord, you can sometimes stuff socks in here to dry.
I’ve been tempted more than once to cut them off but I like the drying-opportunity idea.
Like Dan, I give mine most of their exercise drying socks and underwear, occasionally holding my jacket.
Fast and easy hiking pole holder.
I normally only have 1 on my ULA packs as I remove the 2nd one or order it deleted. It’s used rarely for actually holding an ice axe, but used it is for its original purpose so having 1 on at least one of my packs is a good idea. It gets used more often for holding trekking poles, but most of the time, it isn’t used at all.
you could start taking trips that require an ice axe, then you’ll have a use for them. just think of the expansion in opportunities for you …
