I need a lightweight daypack with pockets

Take a look at the Eddie Bauer Packable 30L Backpack.  Weighs 13 ounces, has side pockets, and a back pocket.  Currently on sale for $30.  There’s also a 20L version.

REI flash 22 pack would be my choice probably.

Are you carrying a full-size shovel? I can’t imagine doing that with a tiny unframed pack. that said, my thought for a daypack with pockets goes to the Flash 22 as well.

What about the Seek Outside Merlin? 12 oz, slip a sit pad in the mesh against your back for some structure, pocketing includes a long side one for the folding saw and a small top one for smaller tools (in addition to the main compartment), strap your shovel (if it’s a small collapsible one, otherwise I agree with Matthew above) to the front with the shockcord or run gatekeeper straps (through the same webbing tabs that hold the shockcord) for more security.

Not sure an ultralight pack will hold up to carrying tools… seems to me like a heavier pack might be better for the job…

Some good suggestions here. I hadn’t heard of the Seek Outside Merlin or any of the Yar Gear packs. I’ll check them out. BTW, my shovel is a Near Zero titanium. I made a handle from a 17-inch piece of CPVC pipe that’s lighter than the wooden handle that came with it. My total weight is 9.5 oz. Not a full-size ranger shovel, but just the job for digging up and naturalizing fire rings.

You may actually want to check out backcountry skiing day packs. Dedicated ski packs will have what is called an ‘avy pocket’ which is separate from the main compartment and usually has tool organizational sleeves. That pocket is designed to carry an avalanche rescue shovel where the removable handle has a slot, an avalanche probe has a separate slot, and there will also be a slot for a snow saw, etc. The avy pocket is generally large enough to also accommodate ski climbing skins and other wet gear to keep it separate from the main compartment. Ski packs will usually feature robust external strap systems for attaching items such as skis in an A-frame carry or in a diagonal carry, or things like snowboards and snowshoes. These external carry straps can be quite adaptable for various other pieces of kit.

Some good thoughts here. I’ll ponder them and get something in time for the coming backpacking season.
