Many decades ago whist I was walking and working in the UK there was a fabric used for packs and gaiters that had a very thin layer of PE sandwiched between an inner and outer layer of nylon.

When it worked it was great at keeping out the water but it soon developed multiple pin holes and started to leak. I’m wondering if anybody has worked on a similar fabric using Cuben/DCF, using a better skin fabric and if so would it be better or worse than the current crop of Cuben/DCF or proofed nylons/polyesters?

There was a custom order fabric that was offered on BPL a couple years ago.  It was a sandwich with nylon, and a thin layer, not of polyethylene, but one of the waterproofing layers used in Dyneema sandwiches.  Unfortunately, some tests by a BPL fabric guru revealed issues developing with delamination.  A shame, because the hand of the fabric was more like nylon, and much softer than the D-P laminates, like X-Pac, that backpackers often use.  I think the coatings coming out recently are so good, that there is no need to experiment with the clear materials used by D-P for waterproofing.  https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/hh-test-of-extremtextil-20d-silnylon/
