Hurricane Deck in the Los Padres – April 2016

That’s a fun, challenging hike.  Probably more of a winter/early spring affair before it gets too hot and dry up there, although being there for the spring bloom on Bald Mountain is a nice treat.  The east and west sections of the Deck offer similar challenges and rewards.  The San Rafael Wilderness offers lots of other fun adventures through the Manzana and Sisquoc watersheds.

In years past, I’ve alternately had to crawl through mud on overgrown sections of the Deck trail weighed down by wet snow and been scratched up, poked, stabbed and bloodied bashing through fire-charred chaparral skeletons post-Zaca Fire.  Definitely Type II fun…

Thanks for the response Nico. It definitely was a fun 24 hours. The flowers were amazing. My gf and some friends were up on Grass Mountain that same day, and at first I was jealous I wouldn’t get to see the poppies up close.

I am starting to branch out into our forest a bit more now that I have moved back to town. The east and west deck are definitely on my list to do at some point, as are other parts of the San Rafael/Dick Smith/Sespe. It seems like you gotta like the Type II fun at times if you want to get to some of the best places our forest has to offer haha.
