How/where do you pack your inflatable sleeping pad?

I was thinking about folding it up & keeping it in my water bladder (don’t use one) sleeve in my HMG.  Haven’t tried it yet.  But given the great response to my post on whether it’s ok to keep your pack in your vestibule in black bear country – I thought I’d poll everyone on this.  Thanks!

Rolled and placed in the main compartment of my pack. Just above my sleeping bag/down jacket and just below my bear can.

I have a “My-Trail” 70L pack.  It is a big deep sack so I try to keep things in the order I will use them.  That is, my Sleeping bag and pad go in the bottom because it isn’t until I reach camp that I will need them.  I think putting it in the bladder sleeve would just make the deep sack narrower and more difficult to get to things in the middle and bottom.

@bspenser – my load stacks similar to yours, sleeping bag in a pod in the bottom w a bear can on top.  Do you roll it up loose full width or folded & rolled tight?  No sack, just rolled right?

@pliny
– good point. I’m going from a large Gregory Baltoro to an HMG 3400 so thinking how to stack it w less space.

I suspect few people use a stuff sack & just fold or roll it.  Thanks.

I roll mine up in a sack, because the sack is the pump.

In my pack … with the other stuff.  ;-)

I’m always concerned about putting a hole in mine, so I store it in the stock stuff sack and put it in the center of my sleeping bag.  I’m a bit paranoid.

I fold my inflatable pad to approximately pack cross-section size, and put it on top of the sleeping bag, which is in the very bottom of my pack. The pad is the next-to-last thing I want to pull out as I’m setting up camp.

The nice cushy bag below protects from inadvertent pointy/hard things pushing too hard into the folded pad from above. And I fold the inflation sack and put it on top of the pad for more protection.

I use HMG pods, too, so most of the inside of my pack resembles a layer cake.

I used to just roll mine back up and stuff it in its stuff sack, but now I just fold it up (into 4ths?) with my CCF pad and slide it inside against my back.
