How to fix sleeping bag zipper

I’ve got a WM Ultralite sleeping bag that I bought about 2006. It has a YKK 5N (top pull) or 5CN (bottom pull) coil zipper that opened up recently (was zipped up…then the two sides just came apart).

I got the zipper pull down and then gently back up again with the zipper properly mated, but it feels balky. On close inspection, there seems to be a layer of gunk on the outside edges of each row of teeth. (Or maybe it’s just wear. )

So. What’s the best way to clean it? If I scrub away with a toothbrush and soapy water I worry about leavning soap on it.

Any tips?

Also, if I went to the trouble of washing the whole bag, would that actually clean the gunk off the zipper?

I thought of trying to use pliers to squeeze the pull shut a bit, but it doesn’t look like that’s possible with that divider that’s in the upper pull.

Have you contacted WM? I suspect they might be very willing to assist.

I’m having trouble with the zipper on my Zpacks tent. My plan is to use the

“Gear Aid M Essentials Zip Care Liquid Zipper Cleaner and Lubricant” (it’s on Amazon). Then I am going to replace both the metal zipper pulls.

It’s kinda terrible how much I depend on zippers in the back country.

First, I should learn the terminology—Sliders is what I meant, not pulls.

@Roger
—I just might try contacting WM if I don’t come up with a diy solution. I just checked their website and they suggest replacing the sliders.

@Erica
—Thank you, a consensus with WM…replacing the sliders.

@Greg
—Thanks for the info. Again, sliders are the culprit.

In my opinion it is easiest to just cut the coil carefully with scissors at the top near the hood. Slide both the sliders off. Slide new ones on. Make sure they’re in the correct orientation. Then put a slider stop on the coil where it has been clipped. Maybe WM can send you the sliders and stops. Actually the bottom slider might not be worn out, in which case you’ll only need to replace the top slider.

@Ben—Thanks for the idea.

I’ve emailed WM and they said they’ll mail me a new slider set (free!) in a few days, including the stops.

So, it looks like I’ll be back in business soon. And can “Get on the trail!”
