I’m wanting to get a bearikade bear can for an upcoming wonderland trail trip. What’s shown is a BV450. How big of a bearikade could I possibly fit in here? Thanks

You don’t need a bear can on the Wonderland Trail unless you go cross country. The bear poles work very well at each campground for securing your food from the bears. That’s one of several great things about Wonderland. You can also mail or deliver by hand food caches to ranger stations before you set out so you never need to take more than 30+/- trail miles worth of food. You virtually never see bear cans there.
What’s the circumference of the pack? McHale says 42″ minimum to fit a BV500. The Bearikade Blazer is about the size of a 500.
I laughed pretty hard when I saw some of the bear poles on the Wonderland trail. They wouldn’t last two minutes in the Sierra. I suppose having a campsite with a good number of people keeps the bears at bay. Still…
Yeah, mail food ahead and bring a Scout or the BV. Or mail food ahead and trust the bear poles. Maybe they’re better now.
The rangers are great at Mt. Rainier NP if you’re in doubt. They’re some of the most well informed and collegial rangers I’ve encountered, so chat with them and ask. I’ve backpacked there in 2018, 2020, and 2022 with no bear problems, nor have I heard of any such problem. I think bear behavior on Wonderland is different than in the Sierra in part because of the abundance of berries in MRNP means they have less incentive to snag human food. The poles have been used for a long time and the bears were never trained to go after human food at garbage dumps as in the Sierra. They can’t climb the poles so they would need to knock them down. I think that would be pretty tough. If you do take a bear can use the smallest you can find as suggested above. You only need 3 or 4 days between resupplies at the most.
