<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’m sure this has been done to death already, but can anyone tell me if HMG’s DCF8 is the same as 0.74 cuben fiber, as used my MLD and Zpacks? Is there only one producer of cuben fiber and is it therefore of uniform quality? If DCF8 is different, how does it compare to 0.74 and is there a noticeable difference in quality (I know a lot depends on how it is bonded/stiched/reinforced). <span style=”line-height: 1.8;”>Thanks for shedding any clarity on the matter!

This clever bit of marketing fluff can be found here:

“As an example, we have referred to the .78oz/m Cuben Fiber as CF8 and the 1.13oz/m Cuben Fiber as CF11. We like the possibility of now referring to the Dyneema® Composite Fabric versions we utilize in our shelters and stuff sacks as DCF8 and DCF11, but will continue to refine this methodology with DSM.”

Interesting. Sooo, is the 0.78oz (DCF8) pretty much the same as 0.74oz and do they come from the same manufacturer? HMG are obviously trying to make their cf stand out from the crowd – is there anything in it, is their 0.78 / DCF8 different/better quality than the 0.74 used by other cottage industry makers?

There is (and has only ever been) one manufacturer. Cubic Tech (since purchased by DSM) sold the material that it invented as Cuben Fiber. DSM rebranded it as Dyneema Composite Fabric, or DCF after the purchase.

I would have to assume that the slight .04 oz difference in the nomenclature is due to rounding or perhaps the difference between sqare yards vs. square meter, and conclude that they are the same fabric.
