I’m about to pull the trigger on an HMG Windrider, and was wondering if anyone with HMG packs chose any of the customizations I’m considering, and/or wish they did?
I am thinking about getting the side pockets in Dyneema Hardline (like the Southwest) and the main back pocket in the standard mesh. From what I can tell people seem to pick the southwest for the abrasion resistance and are happy with it, but others pick the mesh so they can see what’s inside (and maybe dry stuff as they walk), and are happy with that choice. No one seems to express any regret with their choice, so lacking any tipping point, I’m considering the hybrid approach.
I’m also thinking about getting the removable hipbelt option. The only complaints I’ve seen is the size of the hipbelt pockets and maybe some wish about more padding or a different tightening system. I have a ULA pack with a hipbelt I like, and I think it will fit the HMG Windrider with this mod.
Both these choices are more to address doubts than they are guaranteed improvements. I may be just as happy with the standard HMG Windrider, so my third ask for those with HMG experience, is if I had to choose (on a budget), should I order these mods on a custom HMG 2400 Windrider, or go with a standard HMG 3400 Windrider without the mods. I don’t have any longer hikes planned today, but would love to do the JMT and/or Philmont in the next few years. Which pack would you choose?
Thanks as always for your consideration and feedback,
Bob (Slbear)
