Another quick post for a recommendation. I like hiking in button-up shirts because I can regulate my temperature really well by unbuttoning some or all of the buttons, roll up my sleeves, pop my collar to keep sun off my neck, and also they look good in town.

I’m currently using some kind of synthetic Columbia shirt, which is fine, but for thru-hikes I try to stick to wool for the smell factor. In 2016 I started out with a Icebreaker Half Zip, which was fine for the desert, but I definitely prefer a button up for the reasons listed above.

Anyone come across a good wool button up that I could use everyday for the whole trail as my main shirt? Most of the wool button ups I’m finding are too heavy/warm for daily hiking use.

Thanks,

The outdoor wool clothing company Ibex which shut down over a year ago sold a lot of button up wool shirts. They were out of 150 weight wool if I recall which is what they used for the Indy pullovers. I never owned one of their button up shirts but they are available at eBay elsewhere: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ibex-Shirt-Taos-Plaid-Large-Mens/202406207534?hash=item2f2059a02e:g:LdkAAOSw8D1axa-W

The reborn Royal Robbins company is also making wool (blend) button up shirts.  SmartWool occasionally brings to market shirts with buttons.

Wool&Prince makes very nice light weight merino wool shirts.Tailoring runs slim.  I have one which is worn with a suit when my wife wants me dressed up. It’s too pretty for me to take backpacking :)

Correction: I guess now they have both slim and normal sizes. When I purchased my shirt several years ago that wasn’t an option.

If you google “merino wool button down shirt” you will see the Wool & Prince shirt that Mark Verber mentions, as well as the Smartwool 250 button down among others.

I was going to reco my absolutely favorite lightweight wool LS buttondown, but when I went looking for a link it looks like it was discontinued! :(

Icebreaker LS Compass II. I’ve worn it from the 80s-50s and it is always able to regulate the heat well. If you can find one, check it out.

As an alternative, Nylon is pretty low stink and much easier to find in button up shirts.
