Not really backpacking gear but might be support equipment? Wife and I are always throwing our muddy hiking poles into hatch of my car. I have been putting old socks over the tips. Had lots of scraps of some heavy (gasp) vinyl coated nylon from making kayak covers. Sewed up some sleeves with a funnel top to slide poles into. Added some velcro tabs to keep from sliding off and a loop to grab onto. Real handy. Real simple. Way better than the socks. Might make some extras and give as gifts to hiking friends. Needs about 13″ x 16″ of fabric. Good use for fabric scraps.
