We’ve had plenty of footwear discussion lately. I have a question for folks experienced in hiking trails in Ireland. I’m heading over in May and will be walking part of the Kerry Way as well as other trails. I see the Irish tend to wear waterproof boots rather than low trail runners. I am very comfortable in trail runners at this point, in just about all the conditions I’ve hiked in. The only conditions I prefer my mids are in deep mud, or when going cross country on tussocks, spongy tundra, etc. For this hike I’ll be on trails, but very likely to get wet feet frequently. Pondering which to use. I may bring both anyway, because I’ll use the trail runners around towns, etc.

I’m also interested in any strong recommendations for other hikes in Ireland. Our itinerary is half planned/scheduled but we have some free time too.

Thanks in advance!

I spent 7 days on the Dingle Peninsula years ago. The hiking was amazing: ancient graveyards, stone hermit dwellings, sea vistas, tiny villages, magic wells, cozy pubs with pints waiting for you.  There were not many hikers on the trails.

If the Kerry Way gets lots of traffic in May, there will be mud which can pull your shoes off.  I have hiked the Hadrian’s Wall path twice in May which is very muddy in places. I have taken lightweight mids, once the Salomon Ultra X and another time the Innov8 Roclite 286s.

The UK forum trek-lite.com has some Ireland-based members. It could be useful to be ask over there.
