Convertible pants – love their functionality, hate their looks!

OK, before any vanity attacks, I am looking to wear them both in town and on trail.  When traveling and doing laundry in tiny one-star hotel sinks, I like the idea of separating out the legs (and washing them more often).  So… are there convertible pants that are almost impossible to tell from regular ol’ pants… that you would feel OK wearing to museums, nicer restaurants – pants that don’t scream “H-I-K-E-R”?!?

Don’t own any, but heard Kuhl has some offerings that may fit the bill

i use prana for climbing and other such … probably 200+ days a year …. and generally they have been pretty goood

BUT

this last year ive had 2 pocket zippers blow … and the convertible pants come apart twice at the zipper stitching at the thigh

the issue with the prana zion convertibles is that there is a single line of stitching for on the thigh zips … one good tug or snag and it can pull apart easily

fortunately i bought em from MEC who repaired em for freee

;)

Something to be aware of:

If you wash the legs more often, they will become a different color than the shorts due to fading pretty quickly…

Also, if you hardly ever wear the legs but wear the shorts in strong sunlight a lot, the legs will also be a different color.

Both effects happen surprisingly fast, and don’t counterbalance each other.

Not a big deal for hiking, but for around town – two tone screams hiker much louder than cargo pockets.

Personally, I’d recommend a pair of supplex travel pants in a thickness that isn’t too hot for the summer heat.
