How do CF shelters wear out? Is it small holes forming? Eventually does it tear? Delamination?

How much longer do people get out of MLD silnylon mids compare to cuben?

For repairable damage where I’m not going to die,  my philosophy I’m winning with the lighter weight option until the weight added by my repairs exceeds the weight savings I got by going light.

It appears the big problem is that cuben becomes “fuzzy” when it wears out, and as a result of this it attracts water a lot. So after first rain/fog/mist you are carrying a much more heavier shelter.

Effectively eliminating the main advantage that cuben has over silnylon.

Cuben can either abrade, where holes in the mylar develop and then those fine strands of dyneema start to creep out. These catch on everything so the fabric is taking a lot of damage unless you cover the area in tape soon.

Or cuben can start to delaminated from folding and torsion. Here the mylar starts to bubble, crack and fall off. Once this is happening it’s probably the end, as the problem is usually too widespread to adequately address.
