I have an old Patagonia balaclava (fleece, perhaps 200 Weight). Love it because it does not even attempt to cover mouth or face. Rather, it fits snugly under chin (near adams apple) without strangling, and is great for sleeping in.

I also have another Patgonia balaclava with the same basic fit, but it is made of (probably) capilene (light weight). Great for climbing in the wee hours of the morning.

I’d love to find someone who I can send these too, have them take ’em apart and clone them.

Anyone know of who I might be able to get to do this?

I have searched, and all the commercially available balaclavas cover the face. Don’t want.

Anyhow, any tips and/or leads appreciated! Thanks!

I think you may be talking about the old style Finnish Cowl. If so it is a very easy pattern, basically a stand alone parka hood

Mine is however from Damart in the UK and no longer made

How long have you had them as I haven’t seen the style for decades?

This style can be made in many warmth versions from highly active to Antarctic passive by using different fleece weights and incorporating a windshell.

I’d be happy to sew some up for you but postage won’t make it worth your while and anyway it is an easy DIY even by hand stitching using fleece from Jo-Anns.

They are cut on a fabric fold and it is one line of stitching plus a facing for the cut edges of the hood

You can find some online, like THIS or THIS — but have you considered just buying a buff? They come in many fabrics (incl. fleece and wool), and can be worn in the style you want, like THIS.

Valerie neither of those fit in the same way a Finnish cowl fits and a buff while versatile isn’t as good as the dedicated design. My Damart is over 40 years old but I take it everywhere as a back-up and for sleeping in.

My own recollection of the hood is that it was in Chouinards original pile fabric not Polarfleece.

There is an illustration of it in Colin Fletchers classic book but I found a picture of the Synchilla version on-line

Hi Edward John M,

Your photo is exactly the one that I have and use. It is at least 15 years old. What a great piece of clothing, buts it’s starting to get decrepit…..

“Specialty Outdoors” state in their web page that they don’t make clothing or copy clothing. so that lead that Bob K. suggested didn’t play out.

Edward — Someone is selling the EXACT one in your photo on eBay:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-PATAGONIA-Fleece-Balaclava-Buff-Hood-USA-One-size/323184488062?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D50998%26meid%3Da90620b1b4884a1c81aa2ec097dc3cb2%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D222864313610%26itm%3D323184488062&_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850

Well they only came in one colour per season but I am surprised. I still have my own “Technical” balaclava from around 1990, the one with the Gore PEF layer, that clothing item has saved my bacon on 3 occasions and I will never part with it while I am alive
