For certain trips I’ve been using a gravity filter rig with a Platypus main filter for some years. I like to use an MSR SIltstopper prefilter on these trips, because the water sources are ponds or lakes where the surface can be very weedy, with lots of organic “stuff”.
This kind of material would quickly clog the Platypus main filter if it were not for the prefilter, and in fact I usually do end up scraping the Siltstopper element to restore flow after a day or two.
I notice that the Siltstopper replacement filters are getting hard to find. I would guess MSR is discontinuing them, but I have not gotten a direct reply from MSR as yet.
Any other field-cleanable prefilters I should know about ? I’ve read about various coffee filters, fuel filters and so on as MYOG options.
