I noticed some great prices on Granite Gear packs right now, big sale. I have two – a Granite Gear VC Crown 60 and a Granite Gear Blaze 60. I bought the Crown some years back on a big sale, and it’s a great pack. I used it for a while, but it didn’t carry a bear canister super well; otherwise it was fantastic. I then bought the Blaze through REI, and have used that ever since. It isn’t the lightest pack, but it carries a heavier load (20-30 pounds) really really well. I barely notice 20, and while I notice 30, it’s not bad – no sore spots, no weird loading issues. I only have 30 when I’ve got like 10 days of food, or a big water carry (almost never). I could lighten the Blaze by removing the brain, some of the straps, etc. but I haven’t bothered.

I have tried some other lighter packs, like the Gossamer Gear Mariposa and the Gossamer Gear Kumo, but didn’t like the floppiness and lack of support. The Blaze really works for me so I’ll keep it until it disintegrates completely. Then I might try the REI Flash 55.

Anyway if folks want to try these packs, now’s a good time because they’re extra cheap. Which means it will be hard to sell my Crown – but it might just go to the Scouts, like most of my unwanted gear!

I have the same 2 GG packs, along with a Zpacks Arc Haul.  I use the Blaze for heavier loads and love it.  The Arc Haul is my usual pack and also love it.  Only recent use of the Crown was for a trip to Panama…it pretty much just sits in the closet as a loaner.

I had a Blaze 60. Decent price, decent weight, and it seemed to carry more that the 60 Liters it is spec’d at. Nice design, especially large side pockets on the man  body of the pack, and nice waist belt pockets as well. But, and why I sold it, the pack rode too low. Now matter what I did, the waist belt sagged and the back of the pack rode way down my but. If they could fix that one thing it would be great. This is, of course, my own opinion (and my wife’s too, as she had the same complaint).

It seems to work really well for a lot of people, so, it’s worth a try. If it works for you then that is great.

Haha, I also have a GG Crown and ZPacks Arc. My Crown is from before belt pockets and lid were added and my Arc is a Blast 55, that’s how old they are, but still going strong. These days, I mostly use the GG for winter training. I recommended the GG Crown to my wife and she loves hers. Especially good if you’re looking to save a few bucks.
