I’ve done a few GC trails. Beyond the main Kaibab and Bright Angel trails, what is your favorite GC trail and what did you like about it? I did the Grandview/Horseshoe Mesa/Page spring loop a few years back and it was stunning. Looking for others that folks highly recommend. I’d go spring or fall, definitely not summer, and highly unlikely to go in dead of winter.  I was even thinking that I might do back to back trail loops, doing one trail, and then maybe a major rim trail again too if I can get a permit.

In Dec 2012 I did the Hermit Cr loop – took the shuttle out to the Hermit TH, then looped back to the Village via Havasupai Gardens and the Bright Angel Trail. It’s 30 or 35 miles of pretty well-maintained trail with a couple of fairly reliable water sources. The Colorado is accessible by a side trip down Monument Creek. And of course the views are spectacular. Plan on at least 3 days (4-5 would be better) to give yourself time to gawk and contemplate and do side trips. You can see pics from my trip here.

Others:

1) Boucher – Hermit.  The Boucher descent is thrilling.  It provides cliff edge hiking, a near vertical descent through the redwall and ultimately a lovely relatively untrammeled beach.  This is a challenging 2-night hike; spend night 2 at Monument and not the over-abused Hermit camp area.  Clear water available the first night from Boucher Creek and generally night 2 from Monument Creek.

2) New Hance – Grandview.  This of this as the Grandview/Horseshoe Mesa loop on steroids.  Visually stunning.  And generally good clear water availability (1/2 mile before reaching the beach at the end of the New Hance, and again at Page Spring/Miners Bathtub).

3) The Escalante Route.  Can be Tanner to New Hance (2-3 nights) or Tanner to Grandview (3-4 nights).  The rim to river trails are well established and obvious though may need to navigate an occasional rockslide, but the Escalante Route does not follow established trails and gives a greater sense of remoteness; there is sufficient traffic to create use trails so little risk of getting lost.  As a bonus there is a short climb down and a short climb up (20-30′); both non-technical but some find them un-nerving with a pack on, bring some parachute cord just in case.  Clear water availability can be iffy, be prepared to pull from the Colorado; a glacial silt prefilter recommended.

There was a forest fire recently.

Are there/will there be any trail closures affecting this?

Regarding trail closures, always check the park service website.  All the routes mentioned in this thread (so far) are off the South Rim and not in the S. Kaibab/Bright Angel corridor so should be unaffected by the fire which was on the North Rim.  And a quick scan of the park service website…looks like all currently listed routes should be open today (10/18).
