I just saw this posted over on trek-lite.com and I found it interesting. Features a 15D Recycled Robic and I don’t know what that is really. Can anyone shed some light? Weight without lines, stakes and stuffsacks is 29.8 oz. Poles are DAC 8.7’s. The low 1200 mm HH rating is what would concern me.

rsbtr sells robic but only in 100d and heavier

robic is nylon 6 that’s treated to be a little stronger than regular nylon.  They probably use it in the ripstop grid, regular nylon for the main fabric.

I don’t think it makes much difference.  Maybe robic is a little stronger,  maybe it’s more marketing spin.

I see it won’t fit a 25″ wide mat.   :-(

Its 21.5″ wide at its foot end.

Trail weight (no stakes, lines, bags) is 4 oz lighter than the Copper Spur UL1 but is 4 oz heavier than MSR Freelite 1.

Andy at ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk gives his first impressions of The Free. He also provides more in depth info on the materials and claims at 6′ 1″ tall on a 4 ” thick mat he has enough space. Of course it’s just one man’s perspective though. https://ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/the-free-tent/#Our%20Verdict

While it is small, I think it’s a very nice tried and proven tent design. However, I really think the future of double wall tent design is a fly first pitch. I also think a carbon pole option would make a lot of sense, because if you’re going to sleep in a coffin it might as well be as light as possible for the pallbearer.

I tried that, just once, with my winter double-skin tunnel tent. Utter pain to set up.
“Integral Pitch” is where that is now: the inner goes up with the outer.
At -7 C with a 50 kph wind snow falling and light fading, one really appreciates the speed of getting into shelter!

Cheers

When a tent is described a s “fly first” that is what is meant. The fly pitches with the inner, typically with external poles.

The Durston XDome is a good example…
