Hi Guys..

I had Ben make me one of his superb jackets.. and, I thought I’d share the note that I just sent him on same.

Good Morning Ben:

  • As expected, OUTSTANDING quality!
  • It’s beautiful!
  • Exactly as I had hoped for!
  • And .. Thanks for the GREAT customer service !

Again, you talk, personally , with the owner and maker of the products.. And, he ” customizes ” them to exactly your specific  requirements and measurements.. ………….Ben Rocks !!

( oh, and BTW, no family relation.. he’s just one of the bazillion Smith’s that live on this planet. )

That’s awesome to hear! I feel the same way about my down pants that he made me a few years back. Not to mention my down socks from him is one of my most favorite pieces of gear, and his down pillow case ranks right up there for me too! Ben makes good gear, and I have also been lucky enough to meet him a few times, and even hike with him once… Stand up guy, with outstanding gear. Enjoy your new jacket!  :)

Awesome!

One day I will get a jacket from him fitted to my size, it’s on my long wish list. Congrats and thanks for the review!

He made me a down vest in Cuben, cos I liked the idea, it’s great! It gets used in camp, as a pillow stuffing – crinkly but I wear ear, plugs and it goes in a fleece sack so who cares, is in my bag as an emergency back up on cool days which can’t decide which way it’s going. Ben was both patient and engaged. Excellent product/service/price.

Had him do a sheet/hood combo for me that worked out exceptionally well. I can highly recommend his work.

““Sheet/hood combo” – please elaborate!”

Yes, please do :)

Okay people can we get some photos!?!!

I’ve got a pair of overstuffed down booties/covers from Ben. Couldn’t be out in the winter without ’em!

Ah, ok then.

Fit for a long wide pad. It’s a bit snugger with an exped. Hood zips off. Sheet 2.5oz and hood is 3.75oz. There are some loops at three points down the side

I like the freedom of a quilt but don’t always want to sleep in long underwear. I also tend to stick my arm under my pillow to sleep so having to put a quilt hood addition was annoying.

very well made.

Thanks for sharing a photo. It’s a very interesting setup. I don’t care for long underwear when sleeping either and I don’t like the feel of my XLite pad against my skin. What is the “sheet” made from?

So is the hood your pillow? Or is it to keep your arm warm? I, too, sleep with an arm under my pillow at home but it doesn’t work well with my inflatable pillow and pad.

The sheet is think is a 10d or 20D nylon I think. But I’m not sure on that. It’s a nice feeling material to sleep against. The entire head, pillow and arm will fit under the hood. The specifics were a bit of a guessing game. With Some help from Ben it came out exactly as I’d hoped.

The weight can be offset with 2oz from not taking a sleeping hood. I also take one of the termarest small pillows which are frankly so much better than anything inflatable. I’ve got to the age where I will happily sacrifice carrying 1/2lb more to sleep in great comfort as opposed to messing around all night. I suppose you can add another half pound for the inflatable long wide pad as well, but still.
