This is my new top contender for a new jacket….but I don’t see it talked about much.  At $330….I’m a bit hesitant to pull the trigger since the others that I’m considering I know so much more about (And are so much less $$))

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Montbell–SUPERIOR DOWN JACKET MEN’S  $179 @ 7.3 oz (down)</span>

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Montbell–SUPERIOR DOWN </span><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Parka $209 @ 8.7 oz (down)</span>

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Torid Apex Jacket $175 @ 8.4 oz with hood and 7.5 oz with collar  (synthetic)</span>

I really lean towards down as I really enjoy it more than synthetic….Not interested in the Mtn. Hardware Ghost as I’ve worn a friend’s and not found it warm enough…

Thinking hood as I sleep with a quilt..but not sure about that either….

Info on the GosseFeet or insight on the others I’ve listed would be very helpful.

Sorry…left out one more I’m pondering:

Montbell Ex Light Down Anorack for $269 at 6.2 oz

I have the Montbell Ex Light jacket (no hood), and like it.  However, if you didn’t find the ghost whisperer warm enough, I doubt you would be satisfied with the Ex Light.  It has 0.5 oz less fill weight than the whisperer (sure, it’s 900 fill vs. 800, so it might be about equal warmth wise, but I wouldn’t expect it to be warmer).  I would describe the Ex light as sweater weight, that is, it has insulation equivalent to a 100, maybe 200 weight fleece at a lighter weight and much more compact package (but significantly more expensive price tag.  If you’re looking for a big puffy that will be like a furnace, then you’d definitely want to look at jackets with more fill weight.

I’m going through the same exercise right now and came to the same conclusion with the Goosefeet jacket- it may be pricey, but it has some very appealing specs, including one of the highest insulation to total weight ratios (according to Alan Dixon- check out his write up on jackets if you haven’t already seen it).  Since they’re custom made, each one has different specs, but the one’s I’ve seen discussed online have 4-5 oz. of 950 fill down, which I would speculate is quite a bit warmer than both the ex light and whisperer, while still not being an Antarctic expedition weight puffy.

I hit up Ben last year and got a price for one. It’s exactly what I want but I haven’t yet justified the cost. Maybe some day…at the moment I use a Superior Down hooded and like it a lot.

Being a custom down jacket, whether or not the Goosefeet Gear jacket is for you, but the Mont-Bell Superior Down Jacket and Ex Light, while good jackets, aren’t going to be much, if any warmer than the MH Ghost Whisperer.

Personally, I would love to have a custom Goosefeet Gear jacket with 4-4.5oz of down.

I got my wife the GFG down pants for xmas.  All my interactions with GFG were great and my wife loves the pants.  My primary backpacking jacket is a Patagonia ultralight hoodie but it really isn’t as warm as I’d prefer.  If I manage to convince my dog to shred that jacket then I’d seriously consider replacing it with a GFG down jacket.  The extra ounce or two of down in a UL package that is custom tailored would really scratch my itch…

No idea if you’re interested, but I’ve got a medium Nunatak Skaha I’m selling. A whole lot warmer than anything you have in your post, and at a bargain price if it seems like it’ll fit you. Might be warmer than you’re looking for though.

I wanted a Goosefeet custom parka for about 3 years and just never could pull the trigger. Well, I sold a little cuben to Hoosier up thread and in turn used part of that to finally order one. Should be here in 2-3 weeks or so. 7oz of 950fp is going to be glorious.

I ordereda GFG custom down anorak last summer with 4 oz of 850fp. It came in at 7.8 oz. The previous 3 years I used a Montbell Ex Light anorak which I liked a lot but I run cold and sometimes around camp on cool nights I’d get cold. My Montbell was a medium and fit perfectly so I took measurements of that and sent them to Ben.

Ben is really awesome to work with. Very responsive and delivered a few days early. I took my new GFG anorak on my SoSHR thru hike last Aug and it kept me very warm. It is very, very puffy and warm.

Really interested in the GFG down anorak.  Don, what have you experienced with its packability?  I like to use lower volume packs (35-40L) and jam all my clothes, including my puffy jacket, into a small size HMG pack pod.

Jeffrey,

no issue in pack ability. I use an MLD Burn with a trash compactor for 1-2 night hikes and never have a problem.

Mine packs down to about the size of a softball
