So a friend I’m going on our first trip to glacier is going to show up about 5 days before us and is going to try to get some backcountry sites of medium-short length (7-10 mi days).   Will be July 20-25

Ive been impressed at how far out you need to plan for this park, and didn’t know if there were any tips you might have for getting more last minute sites.  Are there any ranger stations that have shorter lines, etc?

The permit office at Apgar seems to have more staff at the desk, and I’ve had good luck at the one at St. Mary on the east side. You will likely be looking at walk-in permits, and your best bet will be to be at the office right when they open for the day (usually at 7 AM).

Yeah, they will be getting walk-in permits and will for sure show up early.

Didn’t know if there was a better place to go or tips considering some walkin permits can be given out 3 days in advance and others have to be same day?
