Anyone have thoughts or concerns to share on this route by Glacier Peak Wilderness in Washington? I only backpack once or twice a year (almost always in US) so I do my best to pick awesome trails (scenery and sometimes a bit off trail or scramble to spice it up – but nothing technical). I plan on going sometime in August through Labor Day.

– Start by Trinity Trailhead and go up and through Spider Gap connecting Spider Meadows with Lyman Lakes / Cloudy Pass. Looks like the Spider Gap section is a off trail route and might encounter steep snowfields. I have trekking poles and could bring micro spikes if needed.

– By Cloudy Pass I would like to explore possible side trails up Lyman Ridge, Cloudy Peak, and/or Image Lake. Any of these a must do compared to the others? For example if I just have time to do one which should it be?

– Continue from Cloudy Pass to Buck Creek Pass

– I could continue from Buck Creek Pass back on easy trail to Trinity Trailhead though it looks like there is some interesting scenery and possible unmaintained route from Bucks Creek Pass over High Pass and down to Boulder Pass Trail in the Napeequa River Valley. As long as its nothing crazy I would prefer to add the extra scenery and mileage.

– Assuming I go through Napeequa River Valley it appears I go out over Little Giant Pass and need to cross an unbridged Chiwawa River shortly before the short road trek back up to Trinity Trailhead. How is the river crossing in August? I would miss my flight if I had to backtrack and/or take a risk to ford it if its dangerous conditions.

– What type of weather is it here? Does it get hot and humid on the trail in August?

– Is there a better hike I should consider in Washington that does not have permit considerations?
Thanks for any input!

A few things:

  • To do the loop counter clockwise as you describe, you’d leave from Phelps Creek trailhead and finish at Trinity trailhead (assuming you exit directly from Buck Creek Pass).  From Trinity back to your car at Phelps Creek is 3 miles and 700 vertical feet.  Often you can hitch a ride, but it depends on the day, time of day, and luck.
  • Whether you need traction devices on Spider depends on the snow year and time of year.  I’ve done it four times and only needed microspikes in October after a dry year when all the snow on the Lyman side was gone, exposing the few remaining ice patches.
  • Image Lake is nice.  I haven’t done the other things you mention.
  • High Pass is not to be missed.  It can be a side trip with an exit down Buck Creek or an integral part of a Napeequa exit.
  • The Napeequa Valley is gorgeous, especially from Little Giant Pass/Trail.  Beware that there are very few campable spots in that valley, really only one site that can accommodate a few tents.
  • The Chiwawa crossing can be tough early in the season, but easy later.  In the neighborhood of Labor Day I’d expect it to be easy.  From the Little Giant trailhead back to Trinity is maybe 4 or 5 miles.
  • There are no required permits for this hike (except for the free, self-issue things at the trailhead).
  • This is a gorgeous loop and consequently well-traveled.  The Napeequa part slightly less popular, but not because it’s not beautiful; it’s just a more rugged hike with a steep exit and maybe some campsite anxiety.

Hope you have a great trip, whether its Spider-Buck, Spider-Napeequa, or something else.

Thanks for the very informative response!

I’ll probably park by Little Giant Trailhead and try to hitch a ride up to Phelps Creek Trailhead to start the trail. Or do it the opposite way depending on what time I can start the trail. Sounds like there is more/sooner camping options going up towards Spider Gap which would be better if I start in the afternoon.
