David, I will not be able to attend this year, I hope that you guys have a great time out there.  Do you have a way for any of us to send a donation to help offset the cost of the event?  Zelle? Venmo? other?  Thanks.

Same question for me. I was planning to come, but now my son is flying home for spring break on Saturday and we have other family coming in on Sunday. I’ll be happy to donate to the fund.

    Darn, we’ll miss you both.

Anyone who wants to contribute but who can’t attend, please PM me and I’ll give you payment options. Thanks!

Can I get a show of hands from those planning to attend, please?

David, I’ll be there. Thank you for all the organizing you’re doing. What method can we use to contribute to the costs?

Venmo, Apple Cash, PayPal will all work. Attendees can also pay with cash or check at the event.

    See you next week Doug.

6 confirmed so far: Me, peter v, Doug Coe, Tyler & friend, Manfred, David T.

    Maybes: Cathy B., Mark V., Ken T.

Rangers called and checked in with me this morning. Weather forecast is rain on and off Thurs – Sat, with possible snow Saturday night! Bring your warm and rain/snow gear! Vehicle access to Manzanita Point is day-by-day, but if there is only 1/2″ or so on Thursday and Friday we can “probably” get vehicles in. 4×4’s have a better chance of being allowed in I think. Campfires allowed. In-person check in at the Ranger Station starts 2 pm and ends 5:30. You can still register after 5:30 but it’s drop off. More details to follow.

First 5 vehicles get free parking. After that it’s $8/night per vehicle.

Please review the following information received from the park rangers:

You are receiving this email because you reserved a campsite in the Coe Ranch Campground at Henry W. Coe State Park in the near future.  We wish to provide you with some important campground information. Please review the following and share with the rest of your group prior to your check-in date. If you have any questions, our contact information is at the bottom of this page. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, please visit ReserveCalifornia.com or call 800-444-PARK.

For more information on the park, including maps and suggested hikes, please visit parks.ca.gov and search for “Henry W. Coe State Park.”

    CHECK-IN REQUIRED

Please check-in at the Visitor Center upon arrival to the park or by following the instructions on the self-registration board near the stop sign. Earliest check-in time is 2 pm (Please call the park at 408-779-2728 if you will be more than one day late. Your reservation may be cancelled and campsite forfeited if you do not check in or call us by 12 pm on the day following your arrival date). Check out time is 12 pm.

Five vehicles are included in the fee you paid online. Additional vehicles are $8 each per night, and extra parking may be 200 yards or up to ½-mile away from your campsite. We cannot guarantee additional parking, and there is little to no parking outside the park. Carpooling is recommended.

    WOOD & CHARCOAL CAMPFIRES

Wood & Charcoal campfires are currently allowed in the park-provided metal ring at your campsite. You may bring firewood with you or purchase it at the Visitor Center when it is open for $13 a bundle. Wood gathering is not allowed.

    Fireworks are never allowed.

    DOGS

Dogs are allowed on a leash in the Coe Ranch Campground, on paved areas unless otherwise posted, and on the ½-mile Live Oak Trail near the Visitor Center. Dogs are NOT allowed anywhere else inside the park. Dogs must be inside your tent or vehicle with you at night and cannot be left unattended.

    QUIET HOURS

Quiet hours are enforced from 10 pm to 8 am. Generators may operate from 10 am to 8 pm. No amplified music. Report noise violators by dialing 9-1-1.

    FOOD STORAGE

There are NO storage lockers in the campground. There are no bears in the park, but there are foxes, coyotes, wild boar, raccoons, birds, and other smaller critters. Please protect yourself and your family and help keep park wildlife wild by storing food and other scented items in sealable and sturdy containers or in your vehicle with windows rolled up when not under your direct control. Please do not leave trash out. Dispose of garbage in trash receptacles.

    NO WEAPONS OR FIREARMS

Weapons, including firearms, are not allowed.

    CAMPGROUND AMENITIES

The campground has vault toilets. Each campsite has a picnic table, campfire ring, tent pad, and a place to park your vehicle. There are NO showers and NO hot water. Potable water is available in spigots around the campground, but there are NO water or electrical hookups. If your RV needs water, fill up before you arrive to the park. There are NO sinks or wash basins in the campground.

Stock up on supplies and fuel BEFORE driving up to the park. Apart from snacks and sodas sold in the Visitor Center, there is NO ice, food, or other provisions sold at the Coe Ranch Entrance. The nearest grocery store and gas stations are a 30 to 40-minute drive from the park at the intersection of Dunne Ave and US 101.

    COVID-19 ADVISORY

Per Santa Clara County Health regulations, face coverings are strongly recommended inside all park buildings. If anyone in your party is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home. You may wish to bring extra soap and hand sanitizer. Please review the Santa Clara County Public Health Order regarding current COVID restrictions: https://covid19.sccgov.org/public-health-orders

    HIKING INFORMATION

The park offers many hiking opportunities. We have provided some popular hiking loops. Also, kindly remember that dogs are not allowed beyond the Coe Ranch Visitor Center and campground area.

Stay hydrated! Carry 1 liter of water per person, per hour of hiking. For longer hikes, carry at least 4 liters of water per person, a means of purifying backcountry water, and some salty snacks.

    WINTER WEATHER

Winter temperatures average in the 50s and 60s during the day and then drop to freezing overnight. The park can also receive high winds, rain, and sometimes snow. Be sure to check the forecast ahead of time and plan accordingly for current weather conditions.

    GETTING HERE

The Coe Ranch Campground is located at the Coe Ranch Entrance (traditionally known as “Coe Headquarters”) at 9000 E. Dunne Ave, east of Morgan Hill. Take US 101 to the city of Morgan Hill and use the E. Dunne Ave exit. Go east on E. Dunne Ave and follow it 13 miles all the way to its end at the Coe Ranch Entrance. It is a steep, winding road, so the drive from the freeway should take 30-40 minutes. Please note that the Coe Ranch Entrance can only be accessed via E. Dunne Ave from Morgan Hill. There are NO access roads through the park, despite what your GPS might tell you.

When you arrive at the stop sign next to the Visitor Center, stay right of the White Barn where it says “One Way.” Stay right at the next intersection to enter the campground. Please check in at the Visitor Center if it is open or self-register if it is not.

    QUESTIONS?

More information on the park is available at parks.ca.gov. If you have any questions, please call (408) 779-2728 or visit coepark.net and click the “Park Questions” bubble. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, visit reservecalifornia.com or call 800-444-PARK.

Peter V, Re: retro gear, I came to the GGG some years ago sporting my Trailwise exterior frame pack (my ULA was in the shop for a minor repair). Alas, I won’t be bringing it this year since I want to show folks my myog pack. I don’t think I have anything else that’s old and interesting, but I’ll look around.

I’m bringing a Montbell cargo pack circa 1992, ancient MSR Wisperlite from the 80’s I believe, the 56 year old Redwing boots that my mother bought me for Boy Scouts when I was 12 (and still use!), a Walrus 1P micro-tent/hooped bivy from the 80’s, modern re-creation of the classic steel Sierra Cup, maybe a couple of other bits I run across.

Kinda thinking I’ll use the Montbell pack to carry all of that on top of a load of firewood when I make a second run out to my car and back on Friday, since the chances of driving a vehicle in seem vanishingly small.

I just realized that I missed Ken T.’s post that he won’t be attending (darn) – does anyone else have a capacious 4×4 or AWD vehicle we can use, if they let us?

No worries Catherine, there will be plenty of help.

Everyone be sure to bring serious gear. Soaking rains, snow, and lows in the 20’s call for your A-team gear. If someone has a hot tent, this would be the time to bring it!

I’m bringing in several large tarps, a hundred yards of cordage, bungies, MSR Windburner, 2 large butane canisters, 1 qt. of white gas and an MSR Wisperlite, 6 presto logs, hatchet/hammer, UL saws, 8 storm candles, 20 mylar emergency blankets, single malts. On the second run, unless I’m able to divy it up with others going in.
