Gear review after the AZT

I hiked the AZT. I finished on June 5. I started on March 19. When I got to Pine I went home for 37 days to wait for the snow to dry up and hopefully time my return for the opening of the North Kaibab trail. They never did open that up so my timing worked only for the snow.

I went ultralight with a sub-8lb load. I used the same gear the whole way with the exception that I did the 2nd half of the trail with a different pack, and of course I sent things home when I realized the item wasn’t being used. It felt great to have such a light and minimal load. I never wished for anything more.

Gear items include: Timmermade SDUL jacket, Pocket tarp, Nashville Cutaway, Pa’lante V2, Senchi, disposable rain gear, cold-soaked food

Wish I was younger to tackle a trip like this…..

Thanks for the trip report.

Nice wrap up of your gear and its performance.  I’ve met hikers who’ve sewed Nashville shoulder straps onto other packs (replacing the original straps) or on their own MYOG packs.

What I did was opened the seam where the original straps came out, removed the original straps, then sewed up a webbing contraption like the Nashville straps hook into and sewed that into the seam. Then I took the original straps and put the Nashville-type connectors on the end in case I ever want to use the originals. It would be cool if more packs were made with detachable straps and then you could just buy the straps you think are the most comfortable and hook them into whatever pack you think is the best.

Thank you for the extensive review and pack list. No trowel, sunscreen, first aid? No gloves for cold weather?

I’m seeing some places I might cut my own pack weight a bit more…but not to the extent that you have!
