Note to Mods: I looked through the terms and conditions before posting this, and I believe that it is permitted. This is not a solicitation of funds or sale of goods/services. If this is better suited in a different forum section (or if my reading of the TOC is incorrect) then by all means delete this.

Not sure how many of you are in the social media side of the world, but I wanted to share something with you all…

A Facebook group, GearRat Outdoors, is holding it’s second gear raffle. It works as follows:

  • Each raffle ticket costs $1, with a minimum of $5 and a maximum of $20 per person.
  • While the “packages” being raffled are presumptively pre-set, they might change if the minimum number of “tickets” are not sold.
  • If more tickets are sold than needed to purchase the raffled gear, all excess proceeds will be donated to an organization of the majority’s choosing.

As of now, there are three prizes:
1- Summer ul backpacking set up (including custom Zpacks Zero, UGQ 30F 950FP quilt, UGQ sil tarp + bug bivy w/cuben floor, and more…)
2- summer ul shelter
3- summer ul sleep system

For those who are not “in the know,” GearRat is a pretty cool facebook community. Gear swaps and sales, lots of great advice, and good times. The guy in charge, Christian Millet, is a stand-up fellow.

We are going to leave this post/thread here as an informational example only.

After reviewing this case, BPL’s official position will be: no promotion of lotteries/raffles.

We recognize that GearRat Outdoors is a legitimate group, and that they have done events like this in the past. The intention on their part seems to be reasonable and the activity appears to be legitimate, and has had a reasonable outcome.

However, the only provisions provided by most states regarding raffles are for registered not-for-profit corporations. These provisions don’t seem to be universal across all states, which poses particular problems for online raffles.

Thus, BPL cannot endorse this activity or otherwise permit these types of activities to be promoted here.
