Mark Wetherington’s tenkara gear list serves as a great entry point to backcountry fly fishing for newcomers.

Good article, and nice shots of pretty fish in pretty places.

I had never used a fly rod of any kind until I purchased my first Tenkara rod some years ago after attending one of Daniel Galhardo’s presentations.  The simplicity and amazing light weight of the minimal gear made so much sense, especially for the small streams many of us fish, and it’s a no-brainer for backpacking.  Daniel’s passion for the sport is contagious –  it is not uncommon to see him fishing local creeks, and I happily encountered him on a river in another state a couple of years ago.

Since one sometimes needs a “quiver” of gear, I’ve now got several Tenkara rods and somehow even managed to acquire a couple of western fly rods.  And there is still the fallback ultralight spinning rod that gets to come along….  Funny, I don’t really think the fish care that much what is on the other end of their dinner!

    Mark,

Thank you so much for writting this great informative article! I’ve Tenkara fished for about 10 years here in the Colorado Rockies and enjoyed every minute of it. As you mentioned TenkaraUSA is a great company for both rods and information. I’ve used and abused three of their rods and they are so quick to sent replacements parts at a very low price when I phone them. Another supplier your readers might like is TenkaraBum. He tells a great set of wet waders for the warm summer months. Think of them as neoprene knee pads that start slightly above your knees and extend to just above your anklesand attach with Velcro straps. I use them with shorts. Beats waders any day in the summer.

    Best,

    Russ
