For desert hiking I often find myself carrying a lot of water (up to 4 gallons at a time). I patched together this front-pack carrier bag, to carry one two-liter soda bottle, which I find to be the safest and most efficient container for that purpose. The plan is for the bag to let  me increase my carrying capacity or allow me to better balance my pack or at least reduce the load I must lift while hoisting my pack by 4 lbs 9 oz. It is not intended for use drinking while walking. The design intention is to hang the bottle level just below the breastline.

I used an old scrap of 30D silnylon and the sturdier variety of mitten hooks, which must be attached in a particular way to maximize strength (see photo).

It doesn’t look like much, but I think it will be useful and will not bounce. Weight .53 oz, the weight of one MSR Groundhog stake.

That’s an interesting DIY project. And useful for more than water. You could also unhook it and hang it in your shelter, hang y0ur water on a tree…

I’ve seen a similar stuff sack organizer for hammock ridgeline use.

Brilliant!!

I dread long water carries, and this minimizes impact of added weight.
