In July 2017 I’d like to do Four Loop Pass with my family (My wide and I plus our three boys – who will be 4, 5, and 7 years old at trip date). We’ve done lots of previous hiking and the kids are troopers. This summer we did Massie Gap to Mount Rogers and back, adding Wilbrun Ridge and a couple other smaller peaks along the way.
For Four Loop Pass I am struggling with a few things. FWIW, my wife and I carry Atmos and Aura 65L packs. Thanks for you help! Let me know if you need more information.
- We currently have taken warm weather backpacking trips, or car camped. As a result we have sleeping bags that would not be appropriate for 12,000 feet even in the summer. What should we get, do we need 5 bags (one for each)? Is there a way to save weight and space and stay warm with sharing?
- We will plan for 4 days, 3 nights on the trail. With a group of 5, that’s 20 days worth of food. Is it reasonable to think I can get all of that into 2 BV500 bear canisters, if we have day one in the packs?
- I was hoping the boys would carry their own water, their own puffy, snacks, and possibly their own sleeping bag depending on the number and solution we go with. Does that seem reasonable?
- Are there any 4 person tents that are highly packable, light, and not a fortune?
