Last winter I snowshoed up into the nearby Spring Mountains north of the Las Vegas valley. I discovered some very old mining roads now overgrown with mostly grass and some Ponderosa pines.
Luckily this place has a little year-round stream and gives me access to a lot of backcountry. I’ll be backpacking into this area late this summer and set up a base camp. Then I’ll day hike the area and I know it will become my favorite local getaway, summer and winter.
This winter I’ll take my Tele skis and climbing skins to play here. I want to experience a heavy wind & snow storm at the 9,400 ft. campsite altitude. My winterized SCARP II really needs a good test. I can already smell the sage sausage and buckwheat cakes cooking on my Sidewinder/Inferno Caldera Cone wood stove as I watch the snowy forest view.
