I am heading to Vegas end of January and hope to spend a day each in Zion and Bryce with my kids ages 11/14/16. In Zion we will do several trails starting from the Valley and in Bryce we will do a 6-8 mile loop down into the hoodoos.

We own non-waterproof trail runners and will have microspikes and trekking poles. I am not interested in buying new footwear as I live in South Florida and winter hiking is not something that will happen again anytime soon and they will have different sizes anyway by then. Is non-waterproof trail runners and extra socks sufficient or should I buy waterproof socks just in case? Other economical ideas?

Utah native here. Trail runners with wool socks should be plenty for day hikes with no water crossings. We haven’t gotten much snow this year. There was no snow in the main canyon in Zion as of last week. I’m not sure about Bryce, but the whole state has been pretty dry so far this winter, so I imagine it should be fine.
