For insulation on the back of your head, past where the UQ ends, put your extra short, foam sit pad inside of your hood, wrapped from ear to ear, across the back of your head. There is more space there than you think, if the pad goes from your neck to the height of the top of your head, inside of the hood. The foam pad is wind proof but not sweaty since it doesn’t hug the sides of your head. Wear a watch cap next to your skin, then the foam pad, then either your wind shirt with hood or some other hood with more insulation. The hood keeps the pad in the correct position, all night. My head pad is wide enough to fold double when using it as a sit pad, and only tall enough to fit under the hood.
For weather that is cold but not very cold, instead of a balaclava, try using a watch cap with a long cuff on it, and pull it down over the top of your face to past your nose, for sleeping. Your eyes and nose and ears are covered but not your mouth and chin. This works well when there is a full moon shining through your cuben tarp. My fleece watch cap is from the army surplus store.
