Good point. I didn’t like it with the baskets but I didn’t think to try it now that I have removed the baskets. I’ll try it and report back.

Basket weight is negligible. Attach a basket to the tarp loop so you don’t misplace it. Attach the basket to the pole when you set up the tarp. Or try it without the basket. With your single pole setup there’s a lot of tension on the pole and you will be much happier with the pole in the tarp loop.
Another thing, if you use a stake bag, put it on over the handle when using the pole handle down. Â That’ll give it some protection.
Agreed about the basket weight but I cannot remember the last time my tip sunk into the ground. It’s happened like twice in Arizona since I started using trekking poles 2.5 years ago. I’ll keep them in a drawer for my next hike in CA, CO or wherever.
Depends where u are
out here theres often mud, snow, slush, soft soil in the off season
and as folks said sometimes marmots love the taste of em
you should be able to set em tips up or down depending on the situation
while i generally agree with nick that a basket under the tarp is more stable
has anyone actually tested and measure it ???
Theres alot of things that gets passed around but folks havent confimed through numbers
BPL use to be good at this kind of stuff
;)
Nah, I haven’t tested or measured it. Just anecdotal tales from doing it a lot both ways.
You know, its how you operate too :)
Matthew,
If you are still looking for a metal ring, any local bike shop should have aluminum headset spacers. That should work (apologies if you’re headed in a different direction, I haven’t had a chance to read the last few posts here)
Sure! That’s a great source, Steven. The ring I borrowed from my son was similar to a headset spacer. Great idea. Thanks!
