First Lite is a high end outdoor clothing company specifically targeting mountain hunters. Their bread and butter is merino products but they offer other products too. They have a 25oz parka that is 12oz of 800 fill down. That retails around $350 and can be found on sale a couple times a year for closer to $280-$300. To me that seems like a very high value option in terms of warmth to weight and cost. Does anyone see any red flags I could be missing? The down is treated with DWR and 37.5 but I don’t imagine that would skew the weight of down too considerably.

Zack,

This garment is a 11 oz fill, 80/20 mix of 800 fill down and 37.5 synthetic. It does not have a WPB shell and so the synthetic component helps to keep it lofted in precipitation.

The Ico for the 8.8 oz down component is ~5.22 and the 37.5 synthetic is ~.4. A total Iclo of 5.62 has a camp chores thermal neutral temp of ~6F.

The Montbell Permafrost is the closest non-hunting-specific equivalent and includes a Gore Winstopper shell and more features (removable hood, stand up collar, etc. for ~ the same total weight. It has 9.5 oz of 800 fill for an Iclo of 5.62. It will stay at the insulation level after stuffing and the synthetic component of the Chamberlin will progressively degrade.

Thanks for the reply!

I am wondering where you heard the 80/20 blend? I asked FL customer service about this because I was wondering if it was a down/synthetic bled. Their response was:
<div>”The jacket weighs in at roughly 25 oz’s. It features nearly 12 oz’s of 800 FP down, treated with 37.5 by Cocona. It is not a down/synthetic fill blend.”</div>
<div></div>
<div>So I believe it is completely down, just treated. My main concern has been that I purchase it expecting a very warm yet packable parka and realize that it’s actually not as lofty nor as light as expected due to it not actually being 12oz of down but rather some ratio of down and heavier synthetic.</div>
