I’m about ready to pull the trigger on a Feathered Friends bag for my wife, but I’m a little concerned about the slim fit of the women’s bags. She wears a women’s large in most shirts/jackets, so I’m now leaning toward a FF men’s bag, which is more in line with the size of bags she’s been using. I know that she could give up a couple inches, but the Feather Friends women’s bags are 54″ at the shoulders, which seems a bit narrow. Does anyone have any experience with the cut of the women’s bags? Maybe I should give FF a call.
Anyway, I’ve basically narrowed it down to getting the FF Grouse UL or the FF Osprey UL versions, but I’m open to other suggestions. This will be primarily a summer bag as she has a bag EN comfort rated for women down to the teens, but it’s like 43 oz. I’d like to keep this one well under 2 lbs, and the FF bags are spec’d at 25 oz. Oh, and she’s about 5’3″ or so, but seems to like a little extra length.
Advice?

Jan 28, 2016 at 10:02 pm #3378804Well, the Feathered Friends customer service rep was useless. He didn’t even know which bags were bigger or warmer without reading the same specs available on the web.
Jan 28, 2016 at 10:14 pm #3378806I’m hoping some other women will chime in….
you never mentioned where exactly this summer bag will be used or if she sleeps cooler as a lot of us do or what type of tent/shelter you plan on using, it’s all part of her sleep system. I’m between a L and XL in women’s sizes. I’m a side sleeper so I like a bit more room so I use the western mountaineering Alpinelite in high country for above 5,000 feet in the summer, and below that in desert I’ve got the FF vireo ul, which is half the weight but has no zipper or hood. And if it gets unexpectedly cold then I wear my puffy and long silk underwear. So there’s a bit of a trade off if you want less weight but may encounter unexpected weather and then there’s the size issue. She may like the bag longer, but a bag that fits her size with ample room at the shoulders and hips will function better. If you are set on buying FF then I’d talk to them. If not western mountaineering has several bags that are under two pounds that have room and widths that function as summer and shoulder season bags. Both are great brands.
Jan 28, 2016 at 11:09 pm #3378820She does sleep cold, and for any chance of temps much below about 50F, she would bring another bag. The reason I’m looking to get her a new bag is that the only other bag she has that’s comfortable above 50 is a heavy synthetic. So, in warm weather,  her choice now is to bring a heavyish bag that is overkill or a really heavy (> 4 lbs), bulky bag that’s about right temperature-wise. Most of our backcountry trips would not qualify, but she carried a 4+ lb bag in the Smokies last summer.
She’s not much for fiddling with gear or contemplating system approaches and looks sideways at my quilts, so I think a hooded bag is probably best. I’m not set on Featherd Friends, but their bags seem closest to what I’m looking for in terms of size and weight.
Anyway, I’m mostly trying to figure out fit, and your comments farwalker are helpful.

Jan 30, 2016 at 11:57 am #3379086I had a Feathered Friends Swallow Nano and it fit me well. 5’10” 165 and wear a women’s extra large. I have wider shoulders and larger chest so I needed the extra room. I found the bag wasn’t warm enough for me and purchased a Zpacks 10 degree long wide quilt. I couldn’t be happier with the quilt. Warm when I need it and can quickly ventilate for those unexpected hot flashes. I do most of my packing in the Sierras so not much need for a 50 degree bag.
