I’ve been shopping around for lightweight down jacket with a hood, was zeroing in on Montbell Superior Down Parka (2.5oz. 800 fill down, 8.7oz total weight), but in the back of my mind was thinking that I wish it were warmer. I like the Montbell products a lot, they seem to just work for me. But the next step up in warmth in their product line is about 14. oz. (Alpine Light Parka, 4.8oz. of 800 fill, 14.2oz. total weight). The MB Mirage looks tempting, but the 8 denier fabric scares me a little (too delicate/easy to damage?)…and the price.

Then, I stumbled upon the Feather friends EOS. They say it weights 10.6 oz with 3.7oz. of 900-fill down. It’s like the Goldilocks story..this one seems (from reading the specs) that is is “just right.”

Could this be the jacket I am looking for?  ~10-11 oz, quite a bit more down than the Montbell Superior Down parka….hmmmm..

Any thoughts and/or opinions on this?

Thanks!

I’ve got one and it’s fantastic as far as I can tell. I haven’t put through any paces in the backcountry. I bought as part of my kit for a future hike of the JMT. It’s incredibly light, quite warm, and as always from FF, very well built. It would not be a winter camping jacket and it’s not made for that. But for high country summer nights and mornings, I have to believe it’s perfect.

I’m thinking 3 season. In WA state some mornings and nights it can get down to about 25 deg F. So, I am thinking: Light base layer (long sleeve), Mtn hardware microchill fleece hoody ( similar to, perhaps, polartec 100 weight/thickness) and the down jacket.

I got an Eos this year and love it. First I tried a My Trail Gear Hyperlight, the numbers and price looked too good to pass up. The sleeves were too short and the construction not impressive so back it went. After looking at the other possibilities I went with the Eos and couldn’t believe the difference. I am 5’10”, 185, average torso with longish arms and the L fits perfectly. The construction details are in a whole other league, especially around the pockets and zippers. It has been dog walks mostly, no trips yet, but I am very pleased with it’s warmth for the weight. I haven’t had anything this nice since my wife inherited my Hooded Flash jacket when I had that weird, um, growth spurt after my thru in 2010. (Medium just doesn’t cut it any more.)

You should also consider the Nunatak Skaha. Depending on the shell choice, you can get something with a similar final weight of the Eos with 2oz more down.

I tried-on the Eos at the Feathered Friends Store…fit is gonna be a problem for me..arms are a few inches too long. Also, the elastic around the cuffs was not tight enough, so the sleeve ends were wide open….would not be good for me when there’s any wind. Darn..Hm, well maybe I shall consider the Nunatak option, or Goose feet . Thanks for the suggestions!
