Exped Schnozzel to Big Agnes valve adapter?

I finally pulled the trigger on a Big Agnes Insulated AXL pad yesterday.  I wanted to try it out at REI, but they didn’t have a display and wouldn’t open the box so I could inflate it.  So I bought it to try it out at home.  My first impressions are:

  • It’s quite thick–about 3.5″ in thickness–noticeably thicker than my Exped UL 7
  • It is reasonably wide at around 21.75″ measured width (this is for the 20×72 version), although not quite as wide as my UL7
  • I’m not sure if I like the quilted design yet.  My Exped UL 7 has always been supremely comfortable for me. This design is…well, different
  • The thickness of the pad makes the drop from your elbows to the ground noticeably apparent.  I had some trouble getting my elbows to rest comfortably on the floor…had to resort to placing my shoes on either side as “elbow rests” (Mike Clelland’s old trick)

Does anyone know of any adapter (DIY or commercial) for the Schnozzel pump sack to this pad?  I know that BA sells their own pump sack, but it is both heavier and smaller than the Schnozzel–too small to be used as a pack liner.  The Big Agnes valve is slightly wider (measured around 1 1/8″ in diameter) than the Exped valve (measured around 7/8″ in diameter).

Thoughts?

I forgot to mention the weight.  :)  It weighs in 10 g over spec, at 347 g (12.24 oz).  The manufacturer spec is 337 g (11.89 oz).  That’s about 1/4 oz over spec.  Not terrible, but I wish it was under 12 oz.

I found the schnozzel valve fits on the exhaust valve of the big agnes.  I have used it to blow up the mattress.  If you are quick in removing the pump full inflation only takes a puff or two from your lungs to reach full inflation.

Robert, I think the AXL pads have a different set-up. There’s only one valve, not a separate exhaust valve.

The adapter recommended to me by Camp-Tek may work. It’s about $8, and found here;

(I hope that link works, nothing seems to work the way I expect around here.)

Yes, the AXL pad has one valve (in/out).  Thanks for the link.  Do you know of anyone who has tested this product?

I know Exped makes an adapter so the schnozzle can be used with their pads that have included pumps, as those have larger valves…I wonder if that might work.  Might be worth looking into.

@mrgreen4 — have you tested the Schnozzel-to-AXL adapter yet? I’d love to know if the one in your link is the correct one (there are two that are similar, apparently).

Please let us know if you have tried it…thanks.
