In the never ending search for the perfect windshirt, I tried the Montbell Versalite.

Perfect?  I guess that depends on the user.  But, it is pretty impressive.  My findings and opinions may be found here.

Stephen, thanks for posting such detailed results as well as your real world experience about this notable piece of rain gear. I live and hike in the southeastern US and you’ll never hear a hiker from this area ever day a rain jacket doesn’t need pit zips! For instance, I love my OR Foray with the full size zips. If only OR would make a light version. The Versalite seems to be the next best thing with breathability, ventilation and durability (compared to Shakedry) for under 7 ounces and under $200. Now what was the case for Shakedry?

Apparently the Versalite is sold out virtually everywhere (to ship to Europe) in L/gunmetal, and won’t restock this year :(

If anyone finds one, please send it to me :)

As an owner of the previous generation, I like everything about the new Versatile jacket except the pocket placement…seems valuable only for those who wear a climbing harness.  I don’t put my hands in pockets when hiking so they are only valuable to me when in camp…I prefer them in the “traditional” location.  Unfortunately, this design feature would prevent me from upgraded to the new Versalite.
